I read the description of every company in all four Y Combinator batches of 2026. Six hundred and fifty three of them. I was not looking for competitors. I was trying to find out where the work is actually going.
companies out of 653 sit anywhere near the problem of turning a company's ambition into the work its people actually do. Every one of them sits at one end or the other. None sits in the middle.
Nobody in 653 companies is building the link between an ambition and the work that serves it, maintained by something other than a person's discipline. The brains feed context in. The workspaces push labour out. The commitment structure that the labour is supposed to serve is nobody's product.
Local-first has become a mainstream pitch. Turnstone, Sentient OS, screenpipe and Egoist Machines all lead with it. "Your data stays yours" is turning into a category norm rather than a differentiator, which means whatever sits on top of the local files now has to carry the argument on its own.
"Company brain" is being commoditised in real time. At least six funded plays inside twelve months, against a standing request for startups. Every one of them is aggregation: graphs, wikis and repositories that feed agents context. Not one is an operating structure with owners, dates and drift.
Scanned on 28 August 2026 through the Y Combinator company directory index, covering all four 2026 batches: Winter 199 companies, Spring 195, Summer 235, and Fall 24 as listed at the time of the scan. The Fall batch was still filling; an expected two hundred or so will need a re-scan.
Every company's one-line description was read. Companies that looked close to the problem were opened and verified on their own Y Combinator page, and in the two nearest cases on their live product, pricing and security pages. Descriptions on this page are drawn from what each company publishes about itself. Nothing here is a hands-on test, and no claim about any company's product should be read as one.
Counts are as listed on the day. Batch tags are the directory's own.
