Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Current AZ-305 study guide and skills outline

Microsoft revises the AZ-305 skills outline every few months, renames services and retires exams with little notice, so study material from a year ago can teach a product name that no longer exists. Reading the current study guide on Microsoft Learn first, and saving a dated copy, sets the scope for every later project in this area.

First tasks

  • Open the AZ-305 exam page on Microsoft Learn and download the study guide
  • Copy the skill areas and their published ranges into your study notes
  • Highlight every item listed in the guide's change log
  • Check the study guide change log for a new revision @recurring(quarterly)

Azure Administrator prerequisite on your transcript

The Expert credential is only awarded when the Azure Administrator Associate prerequisite sits on the same Microsoft certification profile as a passed AZ-305. Engineers who passed AZ-104 under an old work account, or let it lapse, find out after the design exam that the Expert badge has not appeared. Confirming the prerequisite now, or dating when you will earn it, removes that surprise.

First tasks

  • Read the Expert certification requirements on Microsoft Learn
  • Open your certification transcript and find the Administrator Associate entry
  • Note its expiry date and whether its renewal window is already open
  • Request a profile merge through certification support if it sits on another account

Certification profile and exam account set-up

Exam bookings, score reports, badges and renewals all hang off one Microsoft Learn profile linked to the exam provider, and a legal name that does not match your identity document can stop you at check-in. Setting the profile up correctly before booking anything saves a support ticket in the week of the exam.

First tasks

  • Choose the personal Microsoft account you will keep for certifications
  • Compare the profile's legal name with your identity document letter by letter
  • Link the exam provider account from the certification profile page
  • Send a test email to the profile's contact address

Make it yours.

Install Azure Solutions Architect Expert, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
