Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

First honest co-founder state-of-us conversation

Most co-founders talk about the product every day and about the partnership almost never, until something breaks. A single protected two-hour conversation about what is working between you, what is not and what each of you is quietly worried about gives you a shared starting point for everything else in this area.

First tasks

  • Propose a two-hour slot this fortnight for a conversation about the partnership
  • Write your private answers to what is working and what worries you
  • Hold the conversation somewhere neutral with laptops closed
  • Write and share a half-page note of what you agreed

Roles and decision rights map

Co-founders fall out far more often over who decides than over what is decided. Mapping every recurring decision area, from hiring and pricing to the roadmap and spending, to a single owner with a clear consult or veto list removes the daily friction of two people both thinking they are in charge.

First tasks

  • List every type of decision either of you made in the last month
  • Assign a single owner and a consult list to each decision area
  • Agree the short list of decisions that need both founders
  • Review the map together for drift and quietly reclaimed areas @recurring(quarterly)

Written co-founder charter

Agreements made in a coffee shop in month one are remembered differently by month eighteen. A two or three page charter covering commitment, roles, how you disagree, how you treat each other under stress and what happens if one of you wants out turns those early promises into a document you can both point at.

First tasks

  • Ask the agent to draft a charter outline from your state-of-us note
  • Fill in the commitment, roles and communication sections separately
  • Meet to reconcile the two versions line by line
  • Sign the final charter and save it in the shared founder folder

Make it yours.
