Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Discovery flight and honest fit check

A trial lesson in a light aircraft costs a small fraction of a licence and answers questions no brochure can: whether you enjoy the workload, cope with a bumpy afternoon and like the people at the airfield. Doing it before committing savings or a loan means the biggest decision in this area rests on experience rather than on films and social media.

First tasks

  • Phone two local flying schools or clubs and ask the price of a trial lesson
  • Book the trial lesson for an early morning slot, when the air is usually calmer
  • Ask a pilot you know, or one met through a careers event, for a 20-minute call
  • Write your decision and the reasons for it on the evening after the flight

Class 1 aviation medical before paying for training

Airlines need pilots who hold the highest class of aviation medical, called Class 1 under most authorities and first class in the US, and a problem found after you have spent heavily on training can end the plan overnight. Booking the initial examination with an approved aviation medical examiner before any deposit or loan means you only invest once you know you can hold the certificate.

First tasks

  • Find the list of approved aviation medical examiners on your authority's website
  • Gather prescriptions, your glasses prescription and any specialist letters
  • Book the initial Class 1 or first-class medical examination
  • File the certificate and its expiry date with your pilot documents

Licence route map from your aviation authority

Pilot licences are issued by a national or regional authority, for example the FAA in the US, the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Transport Canada, or in the Caribbean the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority and the national authorities of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other states.

First tasks

  • Decide which authority's licence you need for the airlines you want to fly for
  • Download the authority's guidance on private, commercial and airline transport licences
  • List each licence and rating in order with its minimums and the date checked
  • Note how the authority treats training done in another country

Make it yours.

Install Commercial Pilot Training, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
