Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Deciding whether Network+ is the right next exam

Network+ is vendor-neutral, so it suits people who need to understand networks in general before committing to one vendor's kit, but someone already configuring Cisco switches at work may get more from going straight to CCNA, and someone heading for a security role may want Security+ first.

First tasks

  • Save five job adverts for roles you want in the next two years
  • Highlight every certification each advert names
  • Compare Network+, CCNA and Security+ against those adverts
  • Write down whether you are sitting Network+ and why

Current Network+ exam objectives and gap map

CompTIA revises Network+ roughly every three years, and study guides, videos and question banks for the previous exam code stay on sale long after it retires. Downloading the official objectives for the current code (N10-009 at the time of writing) and scoring yourself against every line stops you studying retired content and shows where the real gaps are.

First tasks

  • Download the current Network+ objectives from the CompTIA website
  • Note the exam code, domains and retirement date on page one of your notebook
  • Score every objective from one to three for confidence
  • List your ten weakest objectives as first study targets

Baseline practice test scored by domain

Most people overestimate what they know about networking because they use networks every day, and a cold practice test early on corrects that in an hour. Taking one before studying, and breaking the score down by domain, gives you a starting line to measure progress against and tells you how long the plan really needs to be.

First tasks

  • Choose a full-length practice test built for the current exam code
  • Sit it cold with a timer and no notes
  • Record the score for each domain in your notebook
  • Tag every wrong answer with the objective it tests

Make it yours.

Install CompTIA Network+ Certification, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
