Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Shadow shifts in two hotel departments

Hotel work looks glamorous from the lobby and very different at 6 a.m. in the laundry or at 11 p.m. on the front desk. Shadowing two departments for a full shift each, ideally one front of house and one back of house, shows you the pace, the hours on your feet, the guest pressure and the teamwork before you spend money on a course or turn down another offer.

First tasks

  • List three hotels or guest houses within travelling distance you could ask
  • Call or email each human resources office asking to shadow a shift
  • Write notes on the evening after each shift while they are fresh
  • Record your decision and three reasons in a short note

Map of hotel departments and tourism roles

Hospitality is far wider than the front desk: rooms division, food and beverage service, guest relations, sales and events, revenue, finance and engineering, and beyond the hotel, tour guiding, attractions, travel agencies, tour operators and destination marketing.

First tasks

  • Ask the agent to draft a list of hotel departments and the entry role in each
  • Read current job listings from three hotels and attractions near you
  • Score each role against your strengths and the hours you can work
  • Circle three target roles and note what each one requires

Entry qualifications for hospitality study

Entry requirements differ between hotel schools and hospitality programmes, and the usual gap is English or mathematics. In the Caribbean that means checking your CSEC passes, with CAPE Tourism or a foreign language helping for degree routes; in the UK it means GCSEs plus a vocational hospitality qualification, and in the US or Canada a high school diploma. Checking now leaves time to resit before applications close.

First tasks

  • Find the entry requirements for three hospitality programmes you would consider
  • List your CSEC, GCSE or high school grades beside each requirement
  • Book a resit for any missing English or mathematics pass
  • Ask a school counsellor whether CAPE Tourism or a language would strengthen your application

Make it yours.
