Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing between EngTech and IEng registration

EngTech recognises people who apply proven techniques and procedures to solve practical problems, while IEng recognises those who maintain and manage existing and emerging technology, often with design and management responsibility.

First tasks

  • Download the current UK-SPEC from the Engineering Council website
  • Highlight the EngTech and IEng statements for each competence area
  • Mark three recent pieces of work against both grades
  • Write down the grade you will apply for and why

Current registration rules and fees check

The Engineering Council revises UK-SPEC from time to time, and each licensed institution sets its own application form, fee, supporter rules and review format. An hour on the official pages now stops you writing to an outdated standard or budgeting from a figure a colleague remembers from years ago.

First tasks

  • Note the edition and date of UK-SPEC on the Engineering Council website
  • Find your institution's current application and annual fees
  • Record how many supporters are needed and what grade they must hold
  • Check whether your grade is assessed by interview, report or both

Choosing the licensed institution to apply through

Registration is granted through one of the professional engineering institutions licensed by the Engineering Council, and each has its own culture, guidance, mentoring offer and fee level. Picking the one that matches your discipline and your employer's links means reviewers who understand your work and a smoother route later to CEng.

First tasks

  • Check the Engineering Council list of institutions licensed for your grade
  • Shortlist the institutions that cover your discipline
  • Ask HR or senior engineers which institutions the company already works with
  • Compare fees, mentoring and application format in one short table

Make it yours.

Install Incorporated Engineer and EngTech, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
