Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Checking the current ITIL Foundation syllabus and exam rules

ITIL is owned and examined by PeopleCert, which took over from AXELOS, and the syllabus, exam format and certificate validity rules have changed more than once since ITIL 4 launched. An hour on the official site before buying anything means every later choice is made against the exam you will really sit, not one described in an old blog post.

First tasks

  • Open the awarding body's ITIL 4 Foundation page and download the current syllabus
  • Copy the exam format and pass mark from the official candidate guidance
  • Note whether Foundation certificates expire and how renewal works
  • Save a one-page exam summary with the date you checked it

Choosing an accredited course or a self-study route

Accredited training organisations sell ITIL 4 Foundation as two or three day classroom courses, live virtual classes and self-paced e-learning, usually with the exam voucher included, and prices for near-identical content vary widely. People who already work in IT support can often self-study with the official book and a voucher, while newcomers tend to pass sooner with a trainer who explains the terms in context.

First tasks

  • Ask your manager or training team whether a preferred ITIL provider exists
  • List one live course, one e-learning package and one self-study route
  • Check each provider on the awarding body's accredited partner register
  • Record the chosen route and its total cost in the purchase decision

Getting the official ITIL 4 Foundation publication

Exam questions are written from the official ITIL 4 Foundation publication, and its exact wording for definitions such as service, value and incident is what the right answer usually matches. Many courses include a digital copy, so confirm what you already have access to before buying the book a second time.

First tasks

  • Check whether your course or employer gives you the official book
  • Buy or download the current official publication if you still need it
  • Map each syllabus section to its chapter on one page
  • Bookmark the glossary where you will see it every study session

Make it yours.

Install ITIL 4 Foundation Certification, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
