Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Energy sector role map and three target jobs

Oil and gas covers far more than the rig: exploration, drilling, production, LNG and petrochemical plants, refining, pipelines and power stations, each with its own technicians, operators and engineers.

First tasks

  • List every energy employer and contractor within commuting distance or with a rotation base near you
  • Read ten current energy job adverts and note the essential qualifications in each
  • Ask someone working in the industry for a twenty-minute call about their shift
  • Choose three target roles and write why each suits you

School subjects and entry grades for energy work

Most technical routes into energy ask for passes in mathematics, English and at least one science, and engineering degrees usually want physics, chemistry and mathematics at advanced level. Checking now which CSEC and CAPE subjects, or GCSEs and A levels, or high school credits, your target courses ask for means you choose subjects that keep the door open rather than finding a gap after results day.

First tasks

  • Download the entry requirements for two technician programmes and one engineering degree
  • Write your current subjects and predicted grades beside each requirement
  • Book a meeting with the school careers adviser about any gaps
  • Enrol in a resit or evening class for any missing subject

Technician, craft or engineer route decision

Three broad doors lead in: craft trades such as welding, pipefitting and scaffolding; technician and operator roles in process, instrumentation, mechanical or electrical work; and graduate engineering in petroleum, chemical, mechanical or electrical disciplines.

First tasks

  • Write the study length and cost of each route on one page
  • Score each route out of five for grades, money and interest
  • Talk the scores through with a parent, mentor or tutor
  • Record the chosen route and the fallback in your career notes

Make it yours.

Install Oil, Gas and Energy Careers, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
