Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Testing whether pharmacy suits you

Pharmacy is often chosen by students who like chemistry and want a health career without the length of medical training, yet the daily work is mostly accuracy, conversation and responsibility for other people's medicines, usually on your feet for a full shift.

First tasks

  • Write down every reason you are drawn to pharmacy in 15 minutes
  • Ask a local pharmacist for a 20-minute conversation about their working week
  • Compare pharmacy with two related health careers on training length and pay
  • Record your decision and the reasons behind it

Pharmacist or pharmacy technician route decision

Two routes lead into a pharmacy: the pharmacist degree, usually four years or more and leading to registration and clinical responsibility, and the technician diploma or certificate, shorter and cheaper and focused on dispensing, compounding and stock.

First tasks

  • Find the pharmacy council or board website for the country you plan to work in
  • List entry grades and course length for both routes
  • Ask a technician and a pharmacist what they earned in their first year
  • Write down the route you chose and why

Chemistry and biology choices for pharmacy entry

Almost every pharmacy degree asks for chemistry, and most want biology and mathematics too, whether as CSEC and CAPE passes, A-levels, or high school science courses for North American programmes. Checking the exact requirements of three target programmes before choosing subjects stops a student discovering at seventeen that one missing subject has closed the route.

First tasks

  • Download the entry requirements for three pharmacy programmes
  • Mark the subjects and grades each programme requires
  • Book a meeting with the school's careers or guidance officer
  • Confirm your subject choices in writing with the school
