Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Shadowing a nurse before you commit

Nursing looks very different on a medical ward at three in the morning than it does on television, and schools increasingly ask applicants what they have actually seen of the work. Spending a shift or a volunteer day alongside a registered nurse, and writing down what surprised you, gives you an honest answer to whether this is for you and real material for your personal statement.

First tasks

  • Ask a nurse you know, or a hospital volunteer office, about shadowing
  • Book a shadowing day, volunteer shift or careers placement
  • Write down what the nurse did hour by hour during the shift
  • Record your decision and three reasons in a short note

Entry subjects and qualifications check

Most nursing programmes want English, mathematics and at least one science, usually biology or human and social biology, and some ask for chemistry too. In the Caribbean that typically means CSEC passes and sometimes CAPE units; in the UK, GCSEs plus A levels or an Access course; in the US and Canada, high school prerequisites with set grades.

First tasks

  • List the subjects and grades you already hold or are predicted
  • Copy the entry requirements of three nursing programmes into one table
  • Mark every gap between your passes and their requirements
  • Email one admissions office to confirm your qualifications are accepted
  • Book a resit or extra subject if a gap remains

Degree, diploma or associate route decision

Depending on the country, you can become a registered nurse through a bachelor's degree, a hospital or college diploma, or in the US an associate degree, and some people start as a nursing assistant or practical nurse and bridge up later. The routes differ in length, cost, which jobs they open and whether they are accepted abroad. Choosing deliberately avoids paying twice for a qualification that caps your options.

First tasks

  • List every route to registered nurse offered in your country
  • Note the length, total cost and qualification each route gives
  • Check with the nursing council or board that each route leads to registration
  • Ask a working nurse which route they would choose today
  • Write down your chosen route and why

Make it yours.
