Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Envelope categories chosen from your variable spending

Envelopes work best on the categories that swing from month to month, such as groceries, eating out, fuel, personal spending and household odds and ends, and worst on fixed bills that leave by direct debit anyway. Picking four to seven categories at the start keeps the system small enough to run every week and aims it at the places money actually leaks.

First tasks

  • Download the last three months of current account and card statements
  • Highlight every payment that changes in size from month to month
  • Group the highlighted payments into no more than seven categories
  • Write the final envelope list on one page and keep it with the envelopes

Three-month baseline for each envelope category

Setting an envelope at the amount you wish you spent, rather than what you really spend, guarantees an empty envelope by the second week. Adding up three months of actual spending in each chosen category gives an honest starting figure that you can trim later, once the system is running and you trust it.

First tasks

  • Total each category's spending for the most recent full month
  • Repeat the totals for the two months before it
  • Mark any one-off spike and note what caused it
  • Work out a monthly average for each category

Physical, digital or hybrid envelope decision

Paper envelopes make spending visible in a way no app can, but they mean carrying cash and finding shops that take it. Digital envelopes inside a banking app keep the same limits with card convenience, and many households settle on a hybrid: cash for groceries and fun money, digital pots for fuel and online spending. Deciding the format for each category before you start avoids running two half-systems.

First tasks

  • List the shops, cafes and sites where each category is usually spent
  • Note which of those places still accept cash
  • Check whether your bank offers spending pots or separate spaces
  • Write cash or digital beside each envelope category

Make it yours.

Install Cash Envelope Spending, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
