Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing a surf school for your first lessons

Most people who teach themselves on a hired board spend their first summer in the whitewater learning habits a coach would have fixed in a morning. A school with qualified instructors, groups of six or fewer per coach and lessons timed to the tide gets you standing safely and tells you what to work on next.

First tasks

  • List the surf schools within an hour of home and their lesson prices
  • Ask each school about instructor qualifications and group sizes
  • Book a block of three lessons on mid-tide slots
  • Write down the instructor's main corrections after the first lesson

Rip currents, beach flags and lifeguard zones

Rip currents are behind most rescues on surf beaches, and beginners are the people who drift into them without noticing. Learning to spot a rip from the beach, knowing what your local beach flags mean and how to escape a current turns the first months in the water from luck into judgement.

First tasks

  • Look up what each beach safety flag means where you surf
  • Watch the water for twenty minutes before a session and point out the rip
  • Ask the lifeguard on duty where today's rips are running
  • Save the coastal emergency number in your phone
  • Re-read your flag and rip card before the summer season @recurring(yearly)

Swim fitness check before paddling out

Leashes snap and boards get ripped away, and when that happens you swim in. Testing that you can swim a few hundred metres without stopping and tread water for several minutes, in a pool before the sea, tells you and your instructor whether you are ready for unbroken waves or need pool time first.

First tasks

  • Book a lane swim at a lifeguarded pool this week
  • Time a 200 m continuous swim and write it down
  • Tread water for five minutes without touching the side
  • Retest the timed 200 m swim @recurring(quarterly)

Make it yours.

Install Surfing Progression, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
