Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Fit interview formats at your target firms

Firms run the fit portion very differently: some give a full personal experience interview on one story with ten minutes of probing, others ask three or four behavioural questions in quick succession, and some fold fit into the first ten minutes of every case. Knowing which format each target firm uses tells you whether you need depth on a few stories or breadth across many, before you spend a single hour rehearsing.

First tasks

  • List every firm you are applying to in a single table
  • Read each firm's interview preparation page and note the fit format
  • Ask one consultant per firm how fit ran in their own interviews
  • Write a two-line conclusion on depth versus breadth for your prep

Career timeline of story raw material

Most candidates pick stories from memory and end up with the same three examples everyone remembers first, not the strongest ones. Walking year by year through school, work, sport, volunteering and side projects and writing down every moment where you led, persuaded, fixed something or failed gives you a pool of twenty or thirty candidates to choose from.

First tasks

  • Write one line for every role, team and major activity of the last five years
  • Under each line, note every moment you led, persuaded, fixed or failed
  • Check old emails, appraisals and photos for moments you forgot
  • Star the five moments where your own action clearly changed the result

Story-to-theme coverage matrix

Interviewers test a handful of recurring themes: leadership, personal impact, teamwork, handling conflict, drive under pressure, entrepreneurial initiative and learning from failure. A grid with your best stories down the side and the themes across the top shows at a glance where you are covered twice and where one awkward question would leave you improvising.

First tasks

  • Choose eight to ten stories from your timeline for the grid
  • Mark which themes each story can honestly answer
  • Highlight any theme with fewer than two stories
  • Pull a replacement candidate from the timeline for each gap

Make it yours.
