Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing this year's carnival abroad

Notting Hill on the August bank holiday, the Labor Day parade on Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway, Toronto's Caribana weekend in early August and Miami Broward in October each have a different feel, cost and crowd. Choosing one carnival deliberately, by January, means bands, leave, flights and beds are booked at early prices instead of in a July panic.

First tasks

  • Write down every diaspora carnival you have been to or want to try
  • Look up this year's dates on each organiser's official website
  • Estimate travel, bed and costume costs for your top three
  • Choose one carnival and tell your crew the date

Carnival weekend budget with a hard ceiling

Costume balances, fete tickets (a fete is a carnival party), a cooler of drinks, food on the road and a taxi home at two in the morning add up to far more than the costume price that started the conversation. Setting one ceiling for the whole weekend, broken into lines, lets you say yes to the things that matter and no to the fourth all-inclusive party without guilt.

First tasks

  • Write down every carnival cost from last time, or estimate them
  • Set a single ceiling for the weekend before buying anything
  • Split the ceiling into costume, fetes, food, transport, kit and buffer lines
  • Share the figures with whoever you are splitting costs with

Carnival savings pot from January

Paying for a costume, flights and fetes out of one August pay packet is how carnival turns into credit card debt. A separate pot, fed by a fixed amount on payday from January, spreads the cost across the year and shows by spring whether the plan is affordable.

First tasks

  • Open or name a separate savings pot for carnival
  • Divide the weekend budget by the months left and set a transfer on payday
  • Check the pot balance against the plan and top up if behind @recurring(monthly:26)
  • Recalculate the monthly amount if the budget changes @recurring(quarterly)

Make it yours.

Install Diaspora Carnivals Abroad, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
