Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Finding a cricket club that fits you

Clubs differ more than newcomers expect: some run four Saturday elevens and a thriving junior section, others scrape a side together every week, and the travel to away grounds can eat a whole day. Visiting two or three clubs before signing up, and asking which team you would realistically start in, saves a season spent carrying drinks in the wrong place.

First tasks

  • List the clubs within forty minutes of home and the leagues they play in
  • Message two clubs to ask when their nets nights run
  • Visit nets or a home match at each shortlisted club
  • Ask each captain which team a player of your standard would start in

Joining the club and registering to play

Most leagues will not let you take the field until you are a paid member and registered on the league's player system, and some have cut-off dates weeks before the first fixture. Getting the paperwork, the subs and the club's group chat sorted early means you are picked from week one rather than left off a team sheet over an admin gap.

First tasks

  • Ask the membership secretary for the joining form and fee options
  • Pay the membership fee or the first instalment
  • Check with the fixtures secretary that your league registration has gone through
  • Join the club's availability app and introduce yourself in the group chat

Laws of cricket every club player needs

Plenty of keen players have watched hundreds of hours of Test cricket and still cannot explain leg before wicket, how a wide is judged in a league match compared with a T20, or whether a batter can be run out off a no-ball. Knowing the handful of Laws that decide club games stops arguments, helps when you take your turn umpiring at square leg, and makes you sharper in the field.

First tasks

  • Download the current Laws of Cricket and your league's playing regulations
  • Read the Laws on LBW, no-balls and wides first
  • List three places where your league's rules differ from the Laws
  • Take an online Laws of Cricket quiz and note the questions you missed

Make it yours.

Install West Indies Cricket and Club Cricket, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
