Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Booking a protected annual career review day

Most people only think about direction when something goes wrong, which is the worst moment to think clearly. Putting a half day in the calendar, away from your desk and outside the employer's appraisal season, turns the review from a vague intention into an appointment you keep every year.

First tasks

  • Pick a four-hour slot at least a month from today
  • Block it in your calendar as busy and add a location away from your desk
  • Arrange cover for anything that would pull you out of the slot
  • Block next year's review day in the same week @recurring(yearly)

A career review folder that holds every year

A review written on loose paper is lost by the following year, and the real value of an annual review appears only when you can compare three or four of them. One folder with the same structure each year, kept somewhere you own rather than on an employer's drive, makes that comparison possible.

First tasks

  • Create a career review folder in storage you control personally
  • Add a subfolder for this year with four named sections
  • Search your email and files for old appraisals and plans to archive
  • Write a three-line note at the top explaining what goes where

Gathering the year's raw material

Memory keeps the last six weeks and the most dramatic moments, so a review written from memory alone judges the whole year on its final month. Spending two hours pulling the calendar, sent mail, notes, appraisal comments and any wins log into one place gives the review an accurate twelve months to work from.

First tasks

  • Scroll back through twelve months of calendar and note the events that mattered
  • Search sent mail for words such as thanks, launched, decided and sorry
  • Copy appraisal comments and feedback for the year into the folder
  • Start gathering material four weeks before review day @recurring(yearly)

Make it yours.

Install Annual Career Direction Review, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
