Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Sabbatical purpose and success statement

A break without a reason tends to dissolve into admin and guilt by week three, and it is also harder to ask for. Writing one page on why you want this time, what you hope is different at the end and what you are deliberately not trying to do gives you the spine of the proposal to your employer and a test for every later choice about length, money and plans.

First tasks

  • Write for twenty minutes on why you want time away from work
  • Pick one main purpose and at most two secondary ones
  • Turn your hopes into three outcomes someone else could check
  • Read the statement to a trusted person and revise it once

Employer sabbatical policy and contract check

Some employers offer paid sabbaticals after a set length of service, others allow unpaid extended leave at a manager's discretion, and many have nothing written at all. Finding out exactly what your contract, handbook and any collective agreement say before you ask tells you whether you are invoking an entitlement or negotiating a favour, which changes the whole conversation.

First tasks

  • Search the staff handbook and intranet for sabbatical and extended leave
  • Copy the eligibility, pay, length and notice rules onto one page
  • Find out whether anyone in the organisation has taken a sabbatical before
  • Note whether your request is an entitlement or a discretionary ask

Leave, unpaid break or resignation decision

There are broadly three routes: a formal sabbatical with a guaranteed return, unpaid extended leave with weaker protection, or resigning and taking a self-funded break before the next job. Each trades security against freedom differently, and choosing deliberately avoids the common mistake of resigning when a sabbatical was available, or clinging to a job you already know you will leave.

First tasks

  • List what you would gain and lose under each of the three routes
  • Answer in writing whether you want to return to this employer
  • Choose a route and write the two strongest reasons for it
  • Write the event that would make you switch to another route

Make it yours.
