Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing a home for your brag document

A log you cannot open in ten seconds is a log you stop writing. Picking one place for it, a plain document, a notes app or a spreadsheet, that you can reach on both phone and laptop and that you will still own if you leave your employer, removes the biggest reason logs die in their first month.

First tasks

  • List the note tools you already use every day on phone and laptop
  • Check whether each one can export to a plain document or text file
  • Create the brag document in the chosen tool and pin it on every device
  • Export a test copy and open it on a different device

Confidentiality rules for what your log may hold

Wins logs often end up holding client names, unreleased figures and screenshots of internal chats, which can breach your contract or a client agreement the moment the file leaves a work account. Reading your employer's acceptable use and confidentiality policies once, and writing your own three-line rule, lets you log freely without creating a problem for your future self.

First tasks

  • Find the confidentiality and acceptable use sections in your contract or staff handbook
  • Write a three-line rule for what may and may not go in the log
  • List the material types that must stay inside work systems
  • Ask HR in writing if the policy on personal notes is unclear

Brag document skeleton with standing headings

Headings decide what you notice. A skeleton with the same six or seven sections every year, such as goals, shipped work, collaboration and mentoring, learning, feedback received and outside work, prompts you to log the things reviews ask about rather than only the loudest project.

First tasks

  • Open last year's review form and note the sections it asks about
  • Draft six or seven standing headings with one line each
  • Paste this year's goals at the top of the document
  • Add one real entry under every heading

Make it yours.

Install Brag Document & Wins Log, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
