Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing the target role for your gap plan

A gap can only be measured against something, and plans aimed at "getting better generally" stall within a month because nothing tells you what to practise. Naming one target role, with a job title, a seniority level and a rough time horizon of 12 to 24 months, gives every later project in this area a fixed point to measure from.

First tasks

  • Write the job title you would like to hold in two years
  • Note the level and type of organisation that hires for that title
  • Park up to two alternative roles in a short list below it
  • Confirm the target role still fits your plans @recurring(yearly)

Five live job adverts for the target role

Your idea of a role and the market's description of it are rarely the same, and the adverts are where employers write down what they will actually test you on. Collecting five current adverts from different employers gives you the raw evidence for the gap analysis instead of guesses about what matters.

First tasks

  • Search two job boards for the exact target title and save three adverts
  • Find two more from employers of a different size or sector
  • Copy every essential and desirable requirement into one document
  • Label each advert with its date, employer type and location

Requirements map from the target role adverts

Five adverts produce forty or fifty requirements, many of them the same skill worded differently. Grouping them and counting how often each appears shows which abilities are table stakes, mentioned in four or five adverts, and which are one employer's wish list you can safely ignore.

First tasks

  • Ask the agent to group the copied requirements into distinct skills
  • Merge or split groups until each line is one testable skill
  • Count how many adverts mention each skill
  • Mark every skill named in three or more adverts as core

Make it yours.
