Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing where the application tracker lives

Searches fall apart when applications are scattered across three inboxes, a notes app and a browser full of tabs. Picking one home for the tracker on day one, a spreadsheet, a board app or a notes database, means every later habit has somewhere to land. The best tool is the one you will open on your phone in a queue.

First tasks

  • List every place an application currently lives: inboxes, notes, portals, tabs
  • Try a spreadsheet and one board app with five real applications each
  • Pick one tool and open it on your phone to check it is usable there
  • Export or back up the tracker to a second location @recurring(monthly:3)

Tracker columns and stage definitions

Without agreed stages, "applied" can mean anything from a two-click submission to a referral with a phone call booked. Defining eight to ten columns and a fixed list of stages, from Saved to Closed, makes the tracker sortable and turns it into data you can count later.

First tasks

  • Write the column list on paper before touching the tool
  • Define each stage in one line, including what counts as Closed
  • Add dropdowns or tags so stages cannot be typed differently
  • Freeze the header row and sort by next action date

Importing every live application into the tracker

Most people start tracking after they have already applied to a dozen places, and those early applications are the ones that go quiet unnoticed. Searching your inbox and job board histories once and entering every live application gives an honest starting count.

First tasks

  • Search your inbox for phrases such as thank you for applying and application received
  • Open the applied list on each job board you have used
  • Enter each application with its date, source and current stage
  • Write the total of live applications at the top of the tracker

Make it yours.

Install Job Application Tracker, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
