Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Contract notice and leaving terms check

Before you say a word to your manager, read what you signed. Your contract, any later variation letters and the staff handbook set your notice period, whether the employer can put you on garden leave or pay in lieu, how unused holiday is treated and which restrictions follow you out. Knowing these in advance stops a surprise in the resignation meeting from changing your start date.

First tasks

  • Find your signed contract and any later variation letters tonight
  • Download the current staff handbook sections on leaving and notice
  • Copy the notice, garden leave, holiday and covenant clauses onto one page
  • List the points you cannot interpret and decide who to ask

Unconditional offer confirmed before resigning

A verbal yes from the new employer is not a job. Offers are often conditional on references, background or credit checks, right to work, medical clearance or a signed contract, and people who resign on a conditional offer occasionally find themselves with neither job. Confirming in writing that every condition is cleared is the single most protective step in this area.

First tasks

  • List every condition named in the offer letter with its current status
  • Email the recruiter or hiring manager asking which conditions remain open
  • Return the signed contract and keep a copy of what you sent
  • Hold your resignation until the confirmation email that all conditions are cleared arrives

Bonus, equity and repayment exposure on leaving

Resigning a few weeks too early can cost a year's bonus, a vesting tranche or a pension match, and some contracts ask you to repay a sign-on bonus, relocation costs or training fees if you leave within a set period. Putting a figure and a date against each item shows what leaving costs and what a new employer may be asked to cover.

First tasks

  • Download your latest equity or share plan statement
  • Find the bonus scheme rules and note the employment condition on the payment date
  • Search your offer letters for clauses about repaying sign-on, relocation or training costs
  • Work out the amount at risk for three different resignation dates

Make it yours.

Install Resignation & Counteroffers, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
