Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Naming what is wrong at work

A bad quarter, a demanding manager and a genuinely damaging workplace feel similar at 11pm, but they call for different responses. Writing down the specific patterns you see (shouting, blame shifting, unpaid overtime expected, colleagues leaving in a steady stream, being cut out of meetings) turns a fog of dread into something you can judge, and tells you whether an exit plan or a fix is the right project.

First tasks

  • Write ten specific things about the job that make you dread going in
  • Mark each one as a person, team or organisation problem
  • Note what you have already tried and how it went
  • Write one sentence deciding whether to plan an exit, try one fix or watch

Target exit date and fallback date

Without a date, an exit plan drifts into another year of "after the busy season". Choosing a target date, plus a later fallback date by which you will leave even without a new job if things have not improved, gives the search a deadline and gives you a light at the end of the week when it gets bad.

First tasks

  • Look up your notice period and count back from a realistic start date
  • Pick a target date and a later fallback date
  • Write the tripwires that would make you leave sooner
  • Tell one trusted person both dates and ask them to check in

Private incident record kept off work systems

Memories of hostile meetings blur within weeks, and if you later need to explain why you left, negotiate an exit or raise a formal concern, a dated factual record is worth far more than a strong feeling. Keeping it on a personal device, not a work laptop or work email, means it stays yours if access is cut suddenly.

First tasks

  • Create a private document on a personal device for the record
  • Write up the three worst incidents you remember with dates and witnesses
  • Add a fixed entry format with date, people, words used and effect on you
  • Check that nothing in the record is copied from confidential work files

Make it yours.

Install Toxic Workplace Exit Plan, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
