Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

CAPE Accounting syllabus and paper format check

Every topic in this area should be checked against the current CAPE Accounting syllabus from the CXC website, because it alone says what Unit 1 and Unit 2 cover, how Paper 01, Paper 02 and the internal assessment fit together, and what private candidates sit instead. Each unit is a separate examination with its own modules, so map both on one page before the first set of notes is written.

First tasks

  • Download the current CAPE Accounting syllabus from the CXC website
  • List the modules of each unit and their topics on one page in syllabus order
  • Note the format of Paper 01, Paper 02, Paper 031 and Paper 032 for each unit
  • Check the current CXC timetable and write your Accounting paper dates on the calendar
  • Check the CXC website for Accounting syllabus amendments each September @recurring(yearly)

Taking Unit 1, Unit 2 or both in one year

Most schools teach Unit 1, Financial Accounting, in Lower Six and Unit 2, Cost and Management Accounting, in Upper Six, but some students sit both in one year or take only one to complete a scholarship profile or meet a programme requirement. Deciding early, with your school's offer and the entry rules for your intended degree in front of you, avoids registering for a unit you are not ready for.

First tasks

  • Ask your Accounting teacher which units the school offers in which year
  • Check whether your intended degree asks for one or both Accounting units
  • Write down the decision and the reason in one paragraph
  • Confirm the registration entry with the school before the deadline

Bridging diagnostic from CSEC Principles of Accounts

CAPE Accounting assumes fluent double entry from the first week, so gaps left over from CSEC Principles of Accounts, such as accruals and prepayments, the allowance for doubtful debts or the layout of the statement of financial position, slow down every later topic. A two-hour diagnostic in the first fortnight shows exactly which skills need rebuilding before partnership and company accounts begin.

First tasks

  • Pick two recent CSEC Principles of Accounts Paper 02 questions on final accounts with adjustments
  • Answer both questions in two hours without notes
  • Mark them against the mark scheme and list each lost mark by skill
  • Reteach the weakest skill and resit a fresh question on it

Make it yours.

Install CAPE Accounting, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
