Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Applied Mathematics syllabus and paper format check

Before buying a revision guide or copying a classmate's notes, spend the first hour with the current CXC syllabus for CAPE Applied Mathematics.

First tasks

  • Download the current CAPE Applied Mathematics syllabus from the CXC website
  • Copy each module's topics onto one page in syllabus order
  • Note the format of Papers 01, 02, 031 and 032 from the syllabus
  • Check the current CXC timetable and write down your unit's exam date

Deciding between Unit 1, Unit 2 or both

Most students sit Unit 1 at the end of Lower Six and Unit 2 a year later, but each unit is examined and certificated on its own, and the right choice depends on the degree you are aiming at and what else you are sitting, especially Pure Mathematics, Physics or Economics.

First tasks

  • List the degree programmes you are considering and their maths requirements
  • Mark where your other CAPE subjects overlap with each Applied Mathematics unit
  • Talk the choice through with your form teacher and a parent
  • Confirm your unit registration with the school's CAPE coordinator

Calculator set-up for statistics and distributions

A scientific calculator with a statistics mode can find a mean, a standard deviation, a regression line and many probabilities in seconds, but only if you know the key sequences before the exam. Checking your model against the CXC calculator rules and learning its statistics functions now saves minutes on every Paper 02 question and catches slips your hand working misses.

First tasks

  • Check your calculator model against the current CXC calculator rules
  • Enter a past-paper data set in statistics mode and find its mean and standard deviation
  • Write the key sequences for regression and normal probabilities on an index card
  • Put spare batteries in your exam pencil case

Make it yours.

Install CAPE Applied Mathematics, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
