Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Current PEP format and timetable check

Before anyone buys a workbook, find out exactly how this year's PEP is set: the Ministry has adjusted the components and the timetable more than once since PEP replaced GSAT. A one-page summary written from the Ministry's own notices stops a family revising for a test that has changed and tells you which dates everything else counts back from.

First tasks

  • Check the current PEP format and timetable on the Ministry of Education's website and note the source
  • Ask the grade six teacher which PEP bulletins or parent guides the school has received
  • Write the one-page summary of components, item types and dates
  • Pin the summary beside the study corner and send a copy to the other caregiver

Starting point diagnostic in the four PEP subjects

Most children are strong in one or two subjects and quietly weak in another, and parents tend to guess wrong about which. A short, untimed diagnostic in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies early in grade six shows where the real gaps are, so the year's effort goes where it counts.

First tasks

  • Pick one grade six practice set per subject from a recent workbook or the school
  • Sit the Mathematics and Language Arts sets on two separate afternoons
  • Sit the Science and Social Studies sets the following week
  • Mark every set and list the topic behind each wrong answer
  • Rank the five weakest topics and share them with the class teacher

Grade six study corner at home

A child who has to clear the dining table and hunt for a pencil loses ten minutes of every session before starting. A fixed corner, even a small one, with light, a clock, supplies and a shelf for PEP books, makes the after-school routine start on time and keeps papers from going missing.

First tasks

  • Walk through the home with the child and agree on the study spot
  • Buy or gather the stationery list, including a protractor and ruler
  • Label a box or folder for marked papers and the mistake notebook
  • Clear and restock the study corner @recurring(monthly:12)

Make it yours.
