Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.
SEA dates and official rules check
Every SEA year the Ministry of Education publishes the exam date, the deadline for school choices, the results release and the registration window, and those dates can move from one year to the next. An hour with the official notices, before listening to any parent group rumour, gives the family one calendar everyone trusts.
First tasks
- Check the current SEA timetable and placement rules on the Ministry of Education website
- Ask the class teacher when the school collects the choices form
- Enter every official SEA date in the shared family calendar
- Save the Ministry's latest SEA circular in the documents folder
How SEA placement really works
Placement is not just a score: it combines the mark, the order of your choices, the places each school has, and for many denominational schools a share of places the board selects itself. Parents who understand the mechanics write choice lists that protect the child, while parents who do not sometimes waste a top choice or leave no realistic option at the bottom.
First tasks
- Read the Ministry's current explanation of how SEA placement is decided
- Write a one-page summary of placement in plain words
- Find out how denominational boards choose their share of Form One places
- List the questions the summary leaves open and ask the class teacher
Family priorities for a secondary school
Before anyone compares schools, agree what actually matters for this child: travel time, single-sex or mixed, a sixth form, sport or music, faith, class sizes or a particular friend group. Writing down the top five priorities stops the choice list turning into a ranking of reputations borrowed from other parents.
First tasks
- Write your own top five things you want from a secondary school
- Ask your child what they most want from their new school
- Merge the lists into five ranked priorities at a family sit-down
- Name two deal-breakers everyone agrees on
