Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Current Exam P and FM syllabus and format check

Exam P and Exam FM are set by the Society of Actuaries and recognised by the Casualty Actuarial Society, and syllabi, learning objectives and delivery rules change more often than study guides are reprinted. Spending an hour on the official exam pages before buying anything means your plan rests on this year's topic list, current fees and the real sitting windows, not a forum post from three years ago.

First tasks

  • Download the current Exam P and Exam FM syllabi from the SOA website
  • Copy each exam's topic areas and stated weight ranges into one note
  • Write the next two registration deadlines and testing windows in your calendar
  • Note the current fee, testing provider and approved calculator list
  • Check whether the CAS or another society you may join counts each exam

Choosing which exam to sit first

Most students sit P first because it builds on the calculus and probability courses they have just taken, but FM can come first if you have finished an interest theory or corporate finance module and probability is still a term away. Choosing deliberately, against your course timetable and the next sitting dates, saves a wasted sitting and puts a first pass on internship applications sooner.

First tasks

  • List the calculus, probability and finance modules you have finished or are taking
  • Mark which syllabus topics each module already covers
  • Estimate the study hours each exam would need from where you are now
  • Write down which exam you will sit first and the window you are aiming for

Exam registration and test centre booking

Registration and seat booking are usually two separate steps: you register and pay with the society, then book a date and seat with the testing provider, and popular centres fill weeks ahead near the end of a university term. Doing both early secures the date your whole study plan counts back from.

First tasks

  • Create or update your SOA account using the name on your photo ID
  • Register and pay for your first exam before the window closes
  • Book a date and seat with the testing provider
  • Save the confirmation and write the reschedule deadline in your calendar

Make it yours.

Install Actuarial Exams P and FM, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
