Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Current CIA syllabus and exam rules check

The IIA rewrote the CIA syllabus to follow the Global Internal Audit Standards that took effect in 2025, so review notes and forum advice from earlier years can describe an exam that no longer exists. Reading the current exam syllabus, the candidate handbook and the testing policies first, and writing down what applies to you with the date you checked, means every later study hour points at the right target.

First tasks

  • Download the current CIA exam syllabus for all three parts from the IIA website
  • Write each part's domains and stated weighting ranges into your notes
  • Copy the sitting length, testing options and retake policy from the candidate handbook
  • Recheck the IIA syllabus page and candidate handbook for changes @recurring(quarterly)

CIA eligibility and evidence of education

Entry to the programme rests on a combination of education and internal audit or related experience, and the evidence the IIA asks for, such as a degree certificate, a character reference and a photo ID whose name matches exactly, is easy to underestimate. Collecting it before you apply avoids a rejected application weeks after you have started studying.

First tasks

  • Read the IIA's current CIA eligibility routes and note which one you meet
  • Scan your degree certificate and check the name against your passport
  • Ask a certified colleague or your manager to provide the character reference
  • List past audit, risk, compliance or control roles with dates and a verifier for each

Opening your CIA application with the IIA

Nothing can be booked until the IIA approves your application in its candidate management system and you pay the application and part registration fees. Once it is approved, a programme eligibility window starts, so knowing that end date from day one shapes the whole three-part timetable.

First tasks

  • Create your candidate profile in the IIA certification portal
  • Compare member and non-member fees before choosing which to pay
  • Upload your evidence and submit the CIA application
  • Put the programme expiry date and a six-month warning in your calendar

Make it yours.

Install Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
