Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Charter eligibility check after the Level III result

Passing Level III does not award the charter on its own: CFA Institute also looks at qualifying work experience, professional references and a membership application that includes agreeing to the Code and Standards. Reading the current requirements in the week your result arrives tells you whether you can apply now or have a gap to close, and how big that gap is.

First tasks

  • Download and save your Level III result letter from your CFA Institute account
  • Read the current charter and membership requirements on the CFA Institute website
  • Note the experience, reference and membership rules on one page
  • Mark each requirement as met, nearly met or not yet met
  • Pick a target month to submit the membership application

Qualifying work experience audit

Most delays in the charter process come from experience that does not clearly fit CFA Institute's description of work in, or directly supporting, the investment decision-making process. Going through every role you have held, with dates and an honest estimate of qualifying hours, shows whether you already have enough and which roles will need careful wording.

First tasks

  • List every role you have held with dates, employer and title
  • Read CFA Institute's examples of qualifying and non-qualifying experience
  • Estimate the qualifying share of hours in each role
  • Compare your total with the current requirement and record the gap
  • Decide whether to apply now or set a date to apply later

Work experience hours log

If you are still building up qualifying experience, a monthly log is far easier to defend than a reconstruction from memory two years later. Recording hours, the investment work done and who supervised it gives you the raw material for the application and for the people who will act as your references.

First tasks

  • Create an experience log from the metrics log template
  • Fill in past months from calendars, timesheets and appraisals
  • Add a running total and the target from the current requirement
  • Record the month's qualifying hours and the work behind them @recurring(monthly:28)

Make it yours.

Install CFA Charter Application, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
