Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Entry route and exemptions for the Operational level

Candidates usually arrive at Operational level by passing the Certificate in Business Accounting or by holding an accredited degree or professional qualification that exempts it. Running every qualification you hold through CIMA's exemption search before you register tells you exactly which of E1, P1 and F1 you must sit, and stops you paying for papers you could have been exempted from.

First tasks

  • Gather transcripts for every degree, diploma or professional paper you hold
  • Run each qualification through CIMA's exemption search and save the result
  • Write down which of E1, P1 and F1 you still need to sit
  • Apply and pay for any exemptions you are entitled to
  • Complete your CIMA student registration if it is not already done

Current Operational level syllabus and blueprint pack

Exam names, syllabus weightings and the list of tested standards change between syllabus versions, and study texts and forums lag behind. Downloading the current syllabus, the exam blueprints for E1, P1 and F1 and the Operational case study guidance from CIMA's website, with the date you checked, gives every later project an official reference instead of a second-hand summary.

First tasks

  • Download the current CIMA syllabus and note its effective date
  • Save the exam blueprints for E1, P1 and F1 in one study folder
  • Copy each paper's syllabus area weightings into your study plan
  • Write a one-page note of the current exam format with the date checked
  • Recheck CIMA's syllabus pages for announced changes @recurring(quarterly)

Choosing the order of E1, P1 and F1

CIMA lets you sit the three Operational objective tests in any order, but the order still matters. Some candidates take the paper closest to their day job first for an early pass, while others start with P1 because its costing and budgeting ideas reappear in the case study. Choosing deliberately, with your work calendar and exemptions in view, avoids three papers half studied at once.

First tasks

  • Score E1, P1 and F1 out of five for how familiar the content feels
  • Mark year end, budget season and holidays on your study calendar
  • Decide the order of the three objective tests and write why
  • Pencil in a target month for each paper and the case study

Make it yours.

Install CIMA Operational Level, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
