Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Why you want a modelling credential, in one page

A modelling certificate is a means, not a goal: the right one for a corporate FP&A role differs from the right one for a transaction services or project finance seat. Writing down the roles you are aiming at, what their job adverts ask for and what you can already do keeps you from paying for a long programme when a focused course would have done.

First tasks

  • Save two current job adverts for each of three roles you want
  • List every modelling skill or tool those adverts mention
  • Write one paragraph on what the credential must prove and to whom
  • Set a budget ceiling and a month you want to be finished by

Comparing modelling certificate providers

Providers differ more than their marketing suggests: some certify course completion, some set a proctored exam you build a model in, and some add a graded case study. Comparing three or four, for example CFI's FMVA, the Financial Modeling Institute's AFM, or a Wall Street Prep, Training The Street or Breaking Into Wall Street certificate, against the same criteria turns a confusing market into a clear choice.

First tasks

  • Shortlist three or four providers that fit your goal statement
  • Score each on assessment, recognition, cost, access period and support
  • Work through a free sample module from your top two
  • Ask two people in your target roles which credentials they noticed
  • Record the provider you chose and why

Excel and modelling skills baseline

Before the first lesson, an honest baseline shows where your hours should go: someone who already writes nested lookups but has never linked a balance sheet needs a different plan from someone fluent in accounting but slow in Excel. Rating twenty specific skills now also gives you a before picture to compare with when you finish.

First tasks

  • List twenty modelling skills you expect the course to cover
  • Rate each from one to four with an example of your current level
  • Time yourself building a five-year revenue forecast from a blank sheet
  • Mark your five weakest skills as the first study priorities

Make it yours.

Install Financial Modelling Certifications, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
