Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Modelling test map for your target firms

Banks, private equity funds and corporate development teams test modelling in very different ways: a paper LBO in a first-round interview, a one-hour LBO on a firm laptop, a three-hour build from a case pack, or a take-home case due in a few days. Knowing which format each firm on your list uses tells you what to practise first and stops you spending a month on merger models for funds that only ask for a paper LBO.

First tasks

  • List every firm and role you are applying to in one sheet
  • Ask two alumni or analysts which modelling test each firm used last season
  • Mark each firm as paper LBO, timed build, take-home case or unknown
  • Choose the format that covers the most live processes and practise it first

Cold baseline attempt at each test format

Before building a plan, sit one practice version of each format cold, under the real clock: a paper LBO in fifteen minutes, a simple LBO in an hour and a short case in three hours. The scores and the points where you stalled are more useful than any self-assessment, and they give you a starting line to measure every later mock against.

First tasks

  • Book three free evenings in the next fortnight for the baseline attempts
  • Sit a paper LBO with a fifteen-minute timer and a pen only
  • Build a one-hour LBO from a short prompt without any saved template
  • Score accuracy, speed and presentation for each attempt in a skills matrix

Bare Excel test laptop set-up

In-office tests are usually sat on a firm laptop with default Excel settings, a different keyboard and no add-ins, so the shortcuts and macros you rely on at home may not exist. Practising on a clean profile with the same defaults removes the shock on the day and shows which habits depend on your own set-up.

First tasks

  • Create a second user profile on your computer with Excel at default settings
  • Remove add-ins, custom ribbons and personal macros from that profile
  • Write down the settings you change in the first two minutes of a test
  • Do your next two practice builds only on the clean profile

Make it yours.

Install Financial Modelling Tests, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
