Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Map of how an investment bank is organised

Candidates who say they want "banking" without knowing the difference between a coverage group and a product group sound like tourists in the first five minutes of a call.

First tasks

  • Read the investment banking pages of three bank careers sites and list the groups they name
  • Sketch the division as coverage teams, product teams and the titles inside them
  • Mark two or three groups you would choose first and write one reason each
  • Ask your first networking contact what their group does on an ordinary Tuesday

Tiered target list of 30 to 40 banks

Applying to every bank you have heard of spreads effort thin, while applying only to the famous names leaves you with nothing if those doors close. A tiered list of bulge brackets, elite boutiques, middle-market banks and regional or local firms, sized to your profile, decides where your networking hours go and gives you a safety net from the start.

First tasks

  • List every bank you already know that hires analysts in your target city
  • Add middle-market and regional firms from deal announcements in your target sector
  • Tag each firm reach, match or likely against your current profile
  • Choose the ten firms you will network into first

Recruiting timeline for your region and level

Recruiting calendars differ sharply by region: in the US, many analyst seats are filled through summer programmes recruited more than a year ahead, while London, continental Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Caribbean markets run their own windows, and off-cycle hiring happens all year.

First tasks

  • Find the current year's application opening dates on five target banks' careers pages
  • Ask your careers service when banks in your region usually interview
  • Write down whether you are early, on cycle or off cycle and what that means
  • Re-check the regional timeline when the new recruiting season opens @recurring(yearly)

Make it yours.

Install Investment Banking Recruiting, then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
