Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Choosing your licence path from SIE to Series 66

Securities roles need different combinations of exams: a broker typically pairs the SIE with the Series 7 and a state law exam, while an investment adviser representative needs the Series 65 or the Series 66. Mapping the role you want, or the role you have been offered, to the exact exams it requires stops you studying for a licence the job will never use.

First tasks

  • Write the role you want and the products it involves in one sentence
  • List the exams FINRA and NASAA require for that role
  • Mark which exams need a sponsoring firm and which are co-requisites
  • Ask compliance or the hiring manager to confirm the path in writing

Current content outlines and exam rules checked

FINRA publishes a content outline for each exam, and NASAA does the same for the Series 63, 65 and 66, with the topic sections, their share of the questions, the time allowed and the passing score. These change, and prep course material can lag behind. Reading the current outline and rules yourself, once, sets the plan on facts rather than on last year's guide.

First tasks

  • Download the current FINRA content outline for each exam on your path
  • Download the NASAA outline for any Series 63, 65 or 66 you plan to sit
  • Note the format, passing score, fees and retake waiting periods
  • Record how long a passed exam stays valid without a registration

Firm sponsorship and Form U4 status

The Series 7 and most other representative exams can only be scheduled once a member firm files for you, usually through Form U4 or an exam request. New hires often wait weeks because nobody owns the filing. Knowing who at the firm files, what they need from you and when the enrolment window opens keeps your study plan and your test date aligned.

First tasks

  • Ask your manager who in compliance files exam requests
  • Send that person every document and history detail they ask for
  • Record the date the request was filed and the window's closing date
  • Check your FINRA account to confirm the window shows as open

Make it yours.

Install Securities Licensing Exams (SIE, Series 7), then tell Aurum the date you're aiming for. It checks whether the plan fits the weeks you actually have.
