Where it starts.

Each project arrives with its purpose, milestones and first tasks written out. Here is how the first three read.

Mapping the seat you are pitching for

A long-only fund manager, a long/short hedge fund pod and an equity research desk want different pitches: a three-to-five-year compounder, a six-to-twelve-month catalyst trade, or a coverage-style rating with a price target. Writing down the seats you are interviewing for, and what each one expects, decides the holding period, the length and the tone of every pitch you build after this.

First tasks

  • List every buy-side or research role you are applying to and tag its seat type
  • Note the holding period and pitch length each seat type expects
  • Message two practitioners to ask what a strong pitch sounds like at their firm
  • Write a one-paragraph pitch brief and save it at the top of your pitch folder

Three-pitch portfolio plan

Interviewers often say "great, now give me another one" or "what would you short?", and candidates with a single idea run out of road in the second round. Planning a main long, a backup long in a different sector and one short (or a long with a clear avoid view) gives you depth without spreading research too thin.

First tasks

  • Write down the three pitch slots: main long, backup long, short or avoid
  • Pick a different sector for each slot
  • Split your available research hours across the three, main long first
  • Set a first-draft date for each pitch in your calendar

Screening for a pitchable company

The idea itself is half the pitch: a mega-cap everyone owns invites the question "what do you know that 40 analysts do not?", while an illiquid micro-cap makes a fund manager switch off. Screening for a business you can explain in two sentences, with enough liquidity for the seat and some sign the market is mispricing it, gives you a shortlist worth real hours.

First tasks

  • Write your screening filters for size, liquidity, sector and coverage
  • Run the filters in a free stock screener and export the results
  • Score each name for understandability, data and a possible variant view
  • Choose the main pitch from the shortlist and write down why

Make it yours.
